Short answer
Every microinteraction has four parts: 1) Trigger; 2) Rules; 3) Feedback; and 4) Loops and Modes.
Explanation
A Trigger starts the interaction (it may be user-initiated by tapping a button or system-initiated by receiving a notification). Rules determine what happens after activation, such as preventing submission when a field is empty. Feedback tells the user what happened visually, audibly, or through vibration, such as changing the button to a checkmark and vibrating the phone. Loops and Modes determine what happens over time or when the action repeats, such as a "Remember me" button or changing a button's state after its first tap.
Common mistakes
- Adding flashy decorative animations that provide no useful feedback about system status.
- Ignoring interaction rules and exception states and only drawing the ideal state.
